Description:
The Dell Management Console is Dell's branded 'one to many' enterprise management console that ships in the box with every server. It lets you discover, inventory, and monitor your Dell enterprise hardware. In addition to providing basic hardware management, it is built on the Symantec Management Platform: an extensible framework that allows for advanced add-on modules from Symantec.
Value:
- Discovery, Inventory & Reporting - Holistic view of the IT environment (clients, printers, physical and virtual servers, switches, storage arrays, tape libraries). User can chose from device tree view, graphical reports, or table view. From any report, users can drill-down to see in-depth hardware inventory data of the device. Hardware discovery/inventory is collected via SNMP for most devices. For servers, the OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) agent is required. And DMC can deploy that remotely DMC provides many pre-canned reports around hardware inventory. Users have the ability to create custom reports as well.
- Hardware Monitoring - Pro-active heartbeat monitoring on user defined scheduled as well as asynchronous event reception for Dell systems. Ability to import SNMP MIBs to receive events from non-Dell devices via agent-less communication. Events may be received from a variety of different protocols (SNMP, IPMI, WMI, ASF/DASH, etc). Any event received may trigger a one or multiple actions based on the criteria of the event received. Actions may include any job/task from other solutions installed on platform.
- Hardware Configuration - Through a simple command line builder Dell Management Console has the ability to push configuration changes to many devices simultaneously. These commands leverage command line utilities such as OMReport and OMConfig which are a part of the OMSA agent/ These commands can be used in conjunction with other jobs or tasks available from other plug-ins installed into the platform. Examples include configuring the DRAC or BMC for out of band management and setting the asset tag, setting the temperature threshold which triggers alerts or customizing the message on a server's bezel just to name a few. Other command line utilities may be leveraged to configure other devices, such as the NaviCLI for EMC Storage management.
- Hardware Updating - Ability to push agent, bios, driver, and firmware updates to Dell servers. Dell Management Console downloads the latest catalog from ftp.dell.com. Hardware/BIOS/Firmware inventory is collected by DMC and administrators can easily run compliance reports and graphically see which systems require Urgent, recommended and optional updates. Updates can be easily downloaded and distributed using bandwidth throttle ling settings from Dell.com on a scheduled basis.
